Thanks so much for the comments.

Benji, it's great to hear your perspective directly from Israel. So many of us are following the developments from afar.

Sarah, glad to know people are talking about it at Limmud. I am on a panel about these issues called "Women's Rights Under Fire in Israel" at LimmudNY next month!

It's no longer a "Battle for Jerusalem" but a battle for all of Israel. Fortunately this is an issue which unites almost all of Israel, from chilonim (secular) to dati leumi (modern Orthodox, loosely translated). The people of Israel AND worldwide Jewry needs to speak up and make sure this continues to be a country for all Jews. What kind of Jewish state are we if JEWS like poor 8 year-old Naama Margolese have to live in fear?

Everyone here at Limmud is abuzz about the recent news in Israel of the virulently judgmental population in Beit Shemesh. Recently an 8 year old girl (who by the way is Orthodox) was spit on for being "immodestly dressed" in a long skirt, etc, and apparently the mainstream media have had enough of sitting back and watching this sort of thing go on.

An absolute must-watch:

There was a protest last night in Israel in the young girl's support. Thank God people are stepping up. Enough is enough.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. In the blog, I am speaking about my own experience, and not speaking for the characters in my film. When I was in Me'a Shearim, I wore a long skirt, long sleeves, and a head covering, despite the summer heat. I was attempting to be respectful of the community's customs, as you suggest. In return, I had stones and insults hurled at me on a public sidewalk. That being said, the characters in my film are working toward a pluralistic, mutually respectful society that can serve as an example for other diverse communities, and I fully support that mission.

I perceive that you have great deal of contempt for the Haredi community. I may be wrong. I am curious whether it is their way of life that bothers you or their attempt to control your actions when you are filming their community. I personally believe that the Haredi community adds to Israel's pluralistic society, it doesn't detract from Israel's community. Though I may not want the Haredi telling me how I can dress in my own neighborhood, I think that, although the way they said it was abhorrent, they have a right to dictate the way one should act in their own neighborhood. If I walked into a conservative mosque, I would certainly wear a burka if that was what was expected of me. It is about respecting customs. I believe that the Haredi do need to learn to respect secular customs but we also need to learn to respect their customs. The way you paint them may breed more enmity than it will mutual respect. I believe that it isn't a battle for Jerusalem, that sounds so violent. It is a peaceful struggle for mutual understanding that I seek and I hope that this is what you seek too. The hard part is getting the Haredi community to see that the secular community has a right to its values as well. I have faith that there is a way to do this. However, I know that painting them as an enemy of all secular society is not a step towards mutual understanding.
